A Tribute to 2010 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Ma. Victoria Carpio Bernido Physicist Educator in the Philippines

1961 - 2022

We bring you very sad news about the passing of Ma. Victoria Carpio Bernido, 2010 Magsaysay co-Awardee with Christopher Bernido, from the Philippines. The Bernido couple are physicist educators with doctorates from the U.S. who dedicated themselves to establishing the Central Visayan Institute Foundation as a pioneer of the highly innovative Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) promoting quality education for the poor. Theirs is a commitment of 20 years to date, that started from their school base in rural Jagna, Bohol.

During the pandemic, when schools shifted to online, the CVIF-DLP proved very well suited to distancing learning, and Marivic Bernido prepared and edited thousands of activity sheets that were uploaded and used by the Department of Education through DepEd Commons. Since 2021, DepEd has adopted the DLP in 16 divisions in partnership with the PLDT Smart Foundation.

2010 Ramon Magsaysay Awards Presentation Ceremonies

Last November, the Bernido couple recorded a webinar about the Dynamic Learning Program for the RMAF-International House of Japan project on "Leaders Shaping the Future of the Indo Pacific, Featuring the Ramon Magsaysay Awardees." Their video will be uploaded this month. This was the last project they undertook together as Marivic was hospitalized soon after, and passed away on January 6.

The Board of Trustees, Management and Staff of RMAF express their heartfelt condolences to Dr. Chris Bernido and family. We remember Marivic Bernido through this short video when she and her husband Chris received the Magsaysay award in 2010.
