Dr. V. Shanta was a key figure in promoting understanding of the disease, its biology, diagnosis to treatment processes, and patient recovery. The more she and her team learned about cancer, the more they were convinced that community education was their strategic approach to reducing cancer cases.
In 2005 she received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service, for her leadership of Chennai’s Cancer Institute (WIA) as a center for excellence and compassion for the study and treatment of cancer in India.
