SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

With sustainability in mind, several Magsaysay Laureates introduced innovations on clean energy.

Magsaysay Awardee HARISH HANDE is an Indian engineer who founded Solar Electric Light Company (SELCO) India in Bangalore, a social enterprise designed to help his country’s underserved market by offering customized solar-powered products usually needed to enhance their livelihoods. Already one of the world’s largest solar technology providers, HANDE and SELCO treat the poor as partners instead of mere consumers.

Similarly, Indonesian Ramon Magsaysay Awardee TRI MUMPUNI founded People-Centered Business and Economic Institute (IBEKA) to harness hydropower technology to economically empower rural villages.

These are just two Ramon Magsaysay Awardees working to bring clean and renewable energy, making it affordable for low-income communities.
